Biography of Nikola Tesla - 1054 Words

Nikola Tesla is undoubtedly one of the most influential scientists of all time. He was born on July 10th, 1856 in Smiljan, Lika; at this time, Smiljan was located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire region of Croatia. Tesla was thought to be one of the very few people who possessed an eidetic, or photographic, memory. He had numerous ideas for possible inventions, which he almost never felt the need to write down. In his lifetime he registered more than seven hundred patents around the world.2 Some of the inventions he patented include: the alternating current, x-rays, the radio, the remote control, the electric motor, robotics, the laser, the Tesla coil, wireless communications, and limitless free energy.3 Although Tesla is not the sole person attributed to some of these technologies, he was the person who initially pioneered most and greatly advanced them all. A Loyalist Life Be Damned by Colonists free essay sample

A revolution was born due to these acts. Yet for we have come to know that for every protest group started, there is an opponent. For the colonial patriots, there were the loyalists to the British Empire. These loyalist were against what Samuel Adams and The Sons of Liberty stood for. The loyalist had no intention of going against Britain and her rule. They felt that Britain was looking out for the colonists and was only making the colonies better. Such loyalists insisted that British soldiers be looked after and even treated like family. Some loyalists went so far as to call the cry for independence the same as killing ties with Britain.Take Reverend Samuel Seabird for example. The Reverend wrote a document titled A View of the Controversy between Great Britain and her Colonies in 1774. This critique was written to criticize the First Continental Congress. In this critique, Seabird goes Into how the colonies are one with Great Britain. He even goes as far as saying The British colonies make a part of the British empire. As parts of the body they must be subject to the general laws of the body (Seabird, 1774). This statement actually holds true In that the colonies are Indeed part of the British Empire.With that being said, Seabird feels that the colonies are hereby bound by Sluts British law to Britain. That could be compared to todays society in that the fifty states in the country that was built from this revolution now have to follow Congress laws from the Constitution. 2 Seabird goes against the Continental Congress calling for independence by comparing it to the human body. He makes this comparison by saying To talk of a colony independent of the Mother Country, Is no better sense than to talk of a limb independent of the body to which it belongs (Seabird, 1774).The comparison makes sense in that a limb in the body cannot function without the entire body and the toys brain is the British Parliament, as well as the King. One main issue that the colonist protested was that of taxation. There was the famous line said by many colonists, No taxation without representation. The colonists had felt that the British government had violated the guaranteed Rights of Englishmen. However, Parliament disregarded those accusations saying the colonists were Mortally represented. Seabird sticks with Parliament in saying Legislation and taxation must be conjoined (Seabird, 1774).He feels the British government has the right to raise or create any tax to support the British government and that it is incontestable. Certain men who fought against Britain felt that the taxation created a source of slavery for the British empire. Thomas Paine, who wrote the famous Common Sense during this time period, wrote another not as well known article. This article was read by General George Washington before the Battle of Trenton and famous Crossing of the Delaware River. This article is known as The American Crisis, Number 1. Written in 1776, the purpose of this article was to instill confidence in a weakened Continental Army. In it, Paine states that Britain has Sluts instilled slavery into the colonies through taxation. Paine says, Britain Has cellared, that she has a right (not only to TAX) but to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER, and if being bound in that manner is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth (Paine, 1776). Thomas Paine truly felt that Britain had indeed made the colonists her slaves through taxation. After all, these taxes were on the goods that the colonists made as well as needed. Britain put the colonists to work for the empires benefit. The colonists main exports were 3 cotton and tobacco.The main import was tea. However, these were all taxed by the Parliament. Many loyalists were fine with the taxes imposed by Parliament. The loyalists felt it was necessary to remain loyal to Britain in that it is the governmental body of the colonies and they had Britains protection. Yet, Thomas Paine was against every single loyalist, or Tory as they were called in the eighteenth century. Paine goes as far to call every loyalist a coward, for a servile, slavish, selflessnesss fear (Paine, 1776). This was every patriots view of Tories in the colonies, especially those who would not fight in the war.Paine goes as far as saying a man under such influence, though he may be cruel, never can be brave (Paine, 1776). He feels that Britain is what controls these peoples lives and that it is not right for a country to do that. In fact, it is in this article that we first see the colonies being referred to as states. This statement of course does not include the Declaration of Independence, which was the first document to call the colonies states right in its first line. Paine calls for the states to unite and fight for freedom for the future. In fact, he says that, at the time, separation is believed by every man to happen at some time. Paine calls for the time to be then. Sluts In fact, Paine ends his article by saying that the movement is growing. Thomas was only a matter of time before the states fully untied against Britain. He even stops talking about Tories at the end of his article and starts talking about how the army is growing. Paine states, .. . Our new army at both ends of the Continent is recruiting fast, and we shall be able to open the next campaign with sixty thousand men, well armed and clothed.This is our situation, and who will may know it (Paine, 1776). This statement held true. After the Battle of Trenton, where Washington did not suffer one casualty, the Continental Armys numbers grew and began to outnumber the British armys numbers. At the Battle of Yorktown, the Continental Army had a 4 number between 18,900-19,900 soldiers including the French Army. The British Army, with the combined forces of the Hessians, had about 9,000 troops. The British suffered a severe number of casualties at the Battle of Yorktown due to the Continental Armys heavy numbers.Pains prediction proved true in that the Continental Army was growing fast and the number of Tories was decreasing. Yet before Thomas Paine, loyalists were writing articles and poems to increase numbers. The Pausing American Loyalist was a poem published in the Middlesex Journal on January 30, 1776. This poem was written to describe the challenges Loyalists faced. In an interesting writing technique, the anonymous poet wrote the poem to that of William Shakespearean Hamlet. The poem accurately talks about the challenges Loyalists faced against the patriots. It is been known that Loyalists were tarred and feathered during this time period. The poem mentions this as a possible result of being a Loyalist of the British Empire. Sluts The treatment of Loyalist was harsh, not Just in New England, but in all colonies. This 5 was especially true prior to the revolution when the Intolerable Acts were put into effect. This is where Loyalist really start appearing during the colonial era. Famous political cartoons of loyalists being tar and feathered begin to show up, as well as unthinkable acts such as rape and murder.Then starting in 1776, Loyalist are once again singled out when the Second Continental Congress declares the thirteen colonies independent. In the poem, the Loyalist poet is contemplating whether to flee to England or not. This is because he realizes the terror that Loyalists are seeing taking place against them. The Loyalist poem even states that the only possible safe resolution would be to flee to England or a safer territory. However, the poet knows that if he were to flee to England, he would be poor. England, at the time, was not a country for poor peoples living.In fact, many poor countrymen died of disease or starvation. The poet would be poor from the taxation occurring in the colonies as well as the fee to travel to England. The Loyalist poet scared for his life as he talks about fleeing. He feels that the colonists are an evil that he wants no part of. This is clearly states To patriot rage, when I have left my all Must give me pause: Theres the respect That makes us trim, and bow to the men we hate. The poet aspects the patriots fighting for something they believe in. However, he hates them for the actions they take against the Loyalist in the colonies.Seabird, as well as the poet, are completely against the patriots actions. In fact, Seabird criticizes the actions of the patriots that he even states a possible war. He clearly states that it would not be war of colonies against England, but that of a civil war. Seabird states, Is it Sluts right to risk the valuable blessings of property, liberty, and life, to the single chance of war? Of the worst kind of war a civil war? A civil war founded on rebellion. Without ever attempting the peaceable mode of accommodation? (Seabird, 1774). Seabird sees the colonists as Englishmen and not separatists. This vision is, in fact, true. There are plenty of records that show that families were separated by sides of patriotism to loyalist. Most notably, Benjamin Franklins family was split during the American Revolution. Benjamin son, William Franklin, was a Loyalist. A result of the Revolution was the destruction of the father-son relationship the two had. The two rarely, if 6 ever, spoke to each other during and after the war because of Benjamin patriotism to Williams loyalist views. In fact, William Franklin moved to England after the war, where Benjamin served as an ambassador to the newly formed United States. William only saw Benjamin once in 1785 when Benjamin was returning from France. The relationship was so torn from the twos difference political views that Benjamin had pretty much sworn off William as his son. In Benjamin will, William was left virtually none of Benjamin wealth and only a spot of property in Nova Scotia. Benjamin Franklin addresses his famous autobiography to his son, but does not mention him once in the famous literature piece. There were even Patriots who earned Loyalist during the war. Most notably and hated is Benedict Arnold. Arnold has been written in history as a traitor to his country. Arnold was a decorated officer for the Continental Army. Yet, he did not receive the recognition he felt he deserved. It is known that Arnold was giving the British the location of colonial troops and location of supplies for the Continental Army. In April of 1780, Arnold resigned from the Continental Army after court martial were held for charges against him. In August of 1780, Sluts Benedict Arnold enlisted his services to the British army and was recognized as traitor by the Continental Army. After the war, Arnold moved to London, following the actions of other Loyalists.He died in 1801. To this day, he is regarded as most famous traitor in American history. Benjamin Franklin said this of the Loyalist traitor, Judas sold only one man [Jesus], Arnold three millions. Loyalists were hated by patriots. After the war, some Loyalists moved back to England for fear of the safety and familys safety. In fact, many Loyalists stayed in America due to family roots that had been in the New World. Only Loyalist who did not have a deep history or connection with American left for England. Ironically, Reverend Seabird stayed in America after the war. By staying in America, he became the first bishop of the newly formed American Episcopal Church. The man who was Loyal to England and was against the patriots actions towards the English Empire stayed in the country help build it to what it would become today. As for Thomas Paine, whose article against Loyalist was analyzed, he became very connected with the French. He played a big part in the French Revolution with his writing The Age of Reason. When Paine returned to American, he was heavily criticized by the Federalists for his injection to the French Revolution and his friendship to then President Thomas Jefferson.Thomas Paine died on June 8, 1809 on his New York estate. Although he was buried on his estate, his body was dug up in 1819 to be buried in his home country of England. His body was never buried there and has been recorded as lost by historians. The Loyalist movement in the colonial era was condemned by patriots. The patriots felt as if the loyalists were traitors to the independence movement. Although many loyalists stayed as mentioned, there were still terrible things done to them, like tar and feather. Enter Nurse She knocks in distress then bows at the feet of Juliet. Line 34-35 Juliet goes over to the nurse and hops in front of her. Line 36-40 Nurse looks worried, shown in her actions too. Juliet grabs nurse and puts her hands on her shoulders. Line 40-43 Nurse says these words fast to show she is shocked. Line44-60 Juliet runs over to her window and starts to talk through it and cries. Nurse tries to comfort her but gets a little bit agitated with the event that has happened. Line 61-70 Nurse puts her hands towards her heart as to cherish Tybalts memories with her. Juliet is awfully confused and she makes her body look like she is being pulled from both arms as if Romeo and Tybalt are on each end. Nurse breaks the new and she instantly retires to a chair. Line 71-90 Juliet instantly falls to her knees and puts her head in her hands then goes over to her bed once again where a elevated pad gradually lifts her up into the air and the rest of the stage fills with thick smoke and redness I did this to show Juliet as a innocent girl, like a angel and the rest of the stage is like hell and she is looking down on it. Nurse is lit by a single white light and is looking up in amazement at Juliet. Line 91-129 Juliets platform returns down to normal level and the red lights turn to blue she stands in front of nurse and says her lines. Nurse holds out her arms to comfort her but Juliet turns her back and goes over to the desk. Line 71-91 At the start you hear something shatter like a glass ornament this is to show Juliets heart breaking after finding out Romeo killed Tybalt. The violins stop before building up to this hell type music with loud drums and low notes combined with low notes to produce a layered effect, it is like something out of a horror movie. Depressing death style music is played but towards the end of the scene happier music is played and the sound affects go back to the swirl noises that this time represent Romeo is going to be there to comfort young Juliet. Richness of Language In this scene the language is very rich and it seems like Shakespeare over indulges in the words that Juliet speaks. One of the main reasons I believe that he uses this type of language is that Juliet is somewhat growing up and has the idea of she is going to loose her virginity to Romeo and she is wildly in love with Romeo, I think the language portraits Juliet as if she is taking a step towards growing up. Mozart's father helped him travel around as a young musician and with this he traveled many places and seen many well-known people and aristocrats. With Mozart's early successes came many challenges to his life. He had greater expectations from the community and from his father. Unlike, Beethoven, Mozart was a bit spoiled as a youth and because of this he would not tolerate to be treated as a servant. He completely relied on his father to help him and would not work with the archbishop. This would become a problem when Mozart did not develop enough initiative and could not make decisions on his own. However, another highly controversial topic is the legalization of prostitution. Considering my knowledge on this subject and talking to average women who arent prostitutes, IVe come to the conclusion that prostitution should be legalized. The courts and the police have more to contend with than two adult eople having consensual sex. Prostitution has a long and interesting history. Its mentioned in numerous texts and often referred to as the oldest profession. Indeed, it has always been a common way for women to make money, even in biblical times. It wasnt until Christianity and the Bible condemned prostitution within versus such as Proverbs 23:27-28, For a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well. Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men. Basically, prostitutes were shunned for their corruption of married men as a moral conflict. Historically, it was common to trade women for property, pleasure and used as alliances between countries and kingdoms. A person can be against prostitution all he or she wants to, but the fact remains that prostitution happened in the past and will continue to happen in the future. Its a common act of the sexes where biological needs can ou t way monetary cost and societal norm ethical barriers. The business minded culture would call this supply and demand and the blue collar worker would call it an honest days work for an honest days pay. Either way, its not that legitimate kingdoms or governments have not recognized prostitution hroughout history, but it appears that they merely renamed and Justified it into something legitimate. History also reminds us that in many ancient cultures, female prostitution was an accepted profession for many women, especially those who could not earn a living any other way husbands killed in war or died from laboring. It wasnt until the church especially the Christian church decided that sex was bad and that prostitution became a sordid form of employment. Even then, on and off, prostitution and brothels enjoyed varying levels of acceptance in the public eye. Some cities and towns had entire red light districts where brothels were, if not welcomed, at least tolerated, so long as the owners and management made their donations to the local law enforcement. Thus, while strictly illegal, the proliferation of prostitution enabled police corruption to flourish as well. The roots of prostitution may be more evolutionary than previously thought stemming from hereditary instincts of our long forgotten ancestry. A study was conducted in University in Singapore which was accepted for publication in the Journal Animal Behavior (Dec, 2007). In his study of the macaque monkeys he discovered that the mount of grooming a male performs on a female prior to a sexual interaction is related to the supply/demand ratio of females per male and males to females at the time of the grooming. James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room James Baldwin’s novel Giovanni’s Room is titled such for the purpose of accentuating the symbolism of Giovanni’s room. Within the novel Giovanni’s room is portrayed with such characteristics as being Giovanni’s prison, symbolic of Giovanni’s life, holding the relationship between Giovanni and David, being a metaphor of homosexuality for David and being a tomb underwater. These different portrayals of Giovanni’s room are combined within the novel to create an overall negative metaphor of homosexuality as perpetuated by society. These different portrayals of Giovanni’s room are dirty, suffocating and restricting; Baldwin is showing the reader that homosexuality can be understood as all of these things, detrimental as they are. The novel is a reflection upon the common belief in society that homosexuality is unnatural and wrong, causing homosexual men to turn societal negativity into self hatred. One of the metaphors for Giovanni’s room is the parallel created linking his room to his jail cell. When Giovanni is in jail, David wonders about the jail cell he is in and says, â€Å"I wonder about the size of Giovanni’s cell. I wonder if it is bigger than his room† (113). In David’s thought he creates the definition of Giovanni’s room being a cell. The prison cell is close in size to his room, and it is also much like the room in that he is stuck there as a prisoner. Giovanni’s permanence in his room, as in the jail cell, is further exemplified when David is talking about the room; â€Å"I’m talking about that room, that hideous room. Why have you buried yourself there so long?† (117). David is directly comparing Giovanni’s room to a tomb, which, like a cell, is an imprisonment. David is say... ...rget it. This negative view of homosexuality is enforced by society, which David absorbs into himself. Through David and his perception of the many metaphors contained within Giovanni’s room, James Baldwin is showing a negative interpretation of homosexuality as identified in society. The metaphors within Giovanni’s room are Giovanni’s prison, symbolic of Giovanni’s life, holding the relationship between Giovanni and David, being a metaphor of homosexuality for David and being a tomb underwater. These metaphors are negative and exist to demonstrate to the reader that homosexuality is restricting, punishing, dirty and suffocating. Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Theory Essay

The Cognitive Development Theory was first identified by Jean Piaget. Jean Piaget was born on August 9, 1896 in Neuchà ¢tel, Switzerland. Piaget became well known by the many papers he published throughout his late teen years. Once graduating from the University of Neuchà ¢tel, he received his Ph.D. in natural science and published two philosophical essay concerning adolescence. These two essays later became the general orientation for the first publication of the Cognitive Development Theory. According to the Jean Piaget Society by Les Smith, Piaget was married to Valentine Chà ¢tenay and soon after had three children. These children where primary examples of the study Piaget was doing concerning with the development from infancy to language. After the age of eighty-five, the Swiss psychologist died in Geneva on 1980, making him one of the most significant psychologists of the twentieth century. The objective of the theory was, and still is, the explanation by which the process o f an infant, and then child develops into an adult that can both reason and comprehend. Saul McLeod published an article, â€Å"Jean Piaget†, in the website Simply Psychology, where he quoted Piaget, â€Å"Cognitive development is a progressive reorganization of mental processes as a result of biological maturation and environmental experience. Children construct an understanding of the world around them, [and] then experience discrepancies between what they already know and what they discover in their environment† (McLeod 2). There are three basic components to Piaget’s Cognitive Theory: Schemas, the four processes that enable the transition from one stage to another, and the four stages of cognitive development. When starting with the Schema, Piaget described this word as a basic building block of intelligent behavior that a person would use by forming information using what the person saw, heard, smelled and touched. In the article, â€Å"Jean Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development†, from ICELS.ca Blog explains how a schema can be thought of as a unit of knowledge, relating to one aspect of the world including objects, actions, and abstract concepts (Unknown 4). An example of schema is how a child will know how to grab his favorite rattle and put into his mouth because he has  gained knowledge of what that object was used for. Dr. George Boeree, author of Jean Piaget, describes how a toddler that is introduced to a new object will use his â€Å"grab and thrust† schema. Dr. Boeree calls this assimilation; the toddler is relating the old schema onto the new object (Boeree 3). The child after knowing how to react with his rattle is then puzzled with the new object in front of him, he does not know how to react and therefore uses the same schema as he would with the rattle, putting the object into his mouth. However if the existing schema does not work, the toddler has to find a new approach, this is known as accommodation. Accommodation occurs when there has been an unpleasant state of disequilibrium. Equilibrium occurs when a child’s schemas can deal with most new information through assimilation. McLeod clarifies the steps in as the four processes than enable the transition from one cognitive stage to another: Assimilation Equilibration New Situation Disequilibrium Accommodation When Piaget continued to study the each of these steps more carefully, he began to see similarities between most of the children in their nature and their timing. This became the development of the stages of cognitive development. The first stage of the cognitive development is the sensorimotor stage which can be found from the ages of zero until approximately two. In this stage the key feature is object permanence meaning how the infant uses his senses and motor abilities to understand the world. In the article, â€Å"Development of using experimenter-given cues in infant chimpanzees: longitudinal change in behavior and cognitive development†, found in Developmental Science, author Sanae Okamoto-Barth states, â€Å"Jean Piaget conducted experiments with human infants which led him to conclude that object permanence was typically achieved around seven to eight months of age† ( Okamoto-Barth 100). He clarifies how this cognitive skill develops in infants through a fixed series of steps with characteristic transitional errors. Throughout this stage there are three reactions that occur: primary circular reaction, secondary circular reaction, and tertiary circular reaction. Between the age of one to four months, the child has the primary circular reaction. In this reaction the child responds with the same action with the object. Dr. Boeree uses the example of a baby sucking on her them, because it feels good she continues to do it (Boeree 3). Between four to twelve months the infant now  uses secondary circulation which involves with the infants surroundings. Dr. Boeree’s example is a rubber ducky that the infant squeezes; the duck makes a â€Å"quack† entertaining the infant and wanting to continue the squeezing in order to get the same response again. As Okamoto-Barth stated this is the part in which object permanence is found. This ability can be recognized when the infant understands that just because an object is out of sight it does not been that it is gone, non-existent. The experiment used to know if the child had this ability was by doing the Blanket and Ball Experiment (McLeod 4). In this experiment Piaget would have a ball in front of the child and once the child got interested with the ball, he would cover it up with the blanket. The deal was to know if the child still believed in the existence on the ball or if he believed it was gone and no longer existed. Infants of a younger age would go about and entertain themselves with different objects in their surroundings, while infants that achieved object permanence would uncover the blanket and find the ball. The third reaction found in the sensorimotor stage is the tertiary circular reaction. This can be found from the ages of one to two. This is when they start to perform trial-and-error experimentations. An example of this reaction would be when a child may try out different sounds or actions as a way of getting attention from his caregiver (Unknown 4). Children also begin to develop symbols to represent events or objects and during this time the child is quickly moving towards the mental representation and mental combination (Okamoto 105). In this occasion, the infant becomes outstanding in pretending. For example the infant will now talk, feed, and play wit h a doll unlike before where she would just suck on it or throw it around. Once these examples are shown in an infant, the preoperational stage is now in place. The preoperational stage happens during the ages of two to seven. Although the child cannot think logically yet, he is acquiring language in a fast pace and is able to represent the work through mental images and symbols. However these images and symbols are only on his perception. The key feature in this stage is egocentrism. Egocentric is when a child sees things pretty much from one point of view, his own (Boeree 4). Piaget used the experiment of the Three Mountains in order to see if the child is in the preoperational stage or has advanced into the next stage. In this experiment children were  asked to choose a picture that showed the scene which they had observed as well as a picture in which what Piaget had seen. Children almost always chose their own view of the mountain. According to McLeod, children experienced this task difficult because they are unable to take on another person’s perspective (McLeod 4). In this stage children also develop curiosity and the questio ns begin. Children tend to make up explanations when they do not have an answer because they only know so little of the world. The third stage of the cognitive theory is the concrete operation stage which varies from the ages of seven to eleven. In this stage logic begins to play a part in the child’s life. Piaget defines a mental operation as an interiorized action, an action performed in the mind (McLeod 4). The mental operations allow the child to think about what he has done or will do. This also permits the child to have the ability to count from one to ten. The key feature in this stage is conservation and the experiment behind this is the Conservation of Numbers. According to Dr. Boeree, conservation refers to the idea that a quality remains the same despite changes in appearance (Boeree 5). The experiment that Piaget conducted was putting four marbles in a row and four below those. The child would then see that the marbles were the same distance from each other and say they were identical. However, on the other side the top row would have more distance between each other than the bottom. A chi ld that was still in the preoperational stage would look at this and believe that that row had more than all the others. On the other hand, a concrete operations child would know that there are still four marbles and that the extent ion of the distance between each marble did not make a difference. Children learn to understand numbers, mass, area, weight, and volume; although they may not be able to achieve them all at the same time (McLeod 6). They can now mentally reverse the direction of their thoughts and learn how to add and subtract. The child can memorize and trace his way home or remember where was the last place they left an object. Finally, the formal operational stage is the last stage of the cognitive development. This stage begins at the age of eleven on to adulthood. During this time, people develop the ability to sustain abstract concepts, such as logical thoughts, deductive reasoning, and systematic planning (Okamoto 108). The person can now comprehend all the possible ways in which he can solve a problem and can approach it in different points of view. The experiment done in this stage is the Pendulum Task, and it is used to find the key feature of manipulation of ideas in the head, such as abstract reasoning. The pendulum task consist of three factors, the length of the string, the heaviness of the weight, and the strength of the push in order to determine the speed of swing of the pendulum. The idea was to try the experimental method of using one same variable every time. If a teenager would tried different lengths with different weights is likely to be getting the wrong answer. Dr. Boeree states that there are four possible ways: conjunction, disjunction, implication, and incompatibility. In this experiment, conjunction is when both the string’s length and the pendulum’s weight make a difference. Disjunction would be with it is either the length or the weight but not both. Implication is the formation of a hypothesis, if this happens then this will occur. Lately, incompatibility is when the cause does not make an effect that was first hypothesized. McLeod quotes, â€Å"Operate on operations not just concrete objects† (McLeod 6). This simply means that the person has developed an inner value system and a sense of moral judgment that will be necessary for life purposes. When it comes to schools and learning abilities, harmless experiments can be used on a child in order to know what stage he or she is in and how the school administration, teachers, and other staffs can help the child out in his learning. At times a child that takes these experiments can excel and is then placed in a higher level where he or she can learn at his pace. When a child is put in a lower class level, he can tend to get bored and then will have no need no drive to want to excel to his abilities. These experiments can also help children when they have dyslexia and need accommodations for their learning skills. Knowing and understanding these stages is not only beneficial for the students and children but also for the adults. Parents, teachers, and other adults can understand how a child best learns and that  way attend them with individual learning, flexibility in the curriculum, and play with them to increase the child’s learning development. Jean Piaget was a curious person when it came to children and how they their minds developed. He has changed how people view the children’s world and the methods in which children are studied. His ideas were put to use to understand and be able to communication with children, pertaining to the educational field. Do-gooder Is Not a Positive Term Do-gooder Is Not a Positive Term Do-gooder Is Not a Positive Term By Maeve Maddox A reader questions the positive use of the epithet do-gooder: One use of the language that disturbs me is the use by my local paper of the term â€Å"Do-gooder† [to refer] to people who are indeed doing good deeds by helping or contributing.  However the only definitions I have seen for the term appear to refer to those who are trying to do good, but do so in unrealistic or wrong means. I feel the current use is not considering the older, perhaps archaic, usage. The OED does list one example of the noun Do-Good to mean â€Å"a person who does good,† but the only citation given is dated 1654 and the usage is labeled obsolete. In subsequent usage, the nouns do-good and do-gooder have not been intended as compliments. These OED examples from the 1920s reflect the pejorative usage: 1923 There is nothing the matter with the United States exceptthe parlor socialists, up-lifters, and do-goods. 1925   He could not stand them- no decently constituted American can- nor the uplifters and do-gooders who rule us to-day. The Web offers numerous examples of do-gooder in headlines that introduce stories that make it clear that the term is meant in a positive sense: Ebola-stricken doc described as driven do-gooder Africa [has become] the hottest continent for A-list do-gooders like Bono and Brangelina. Salvation Army honors Mon Valley do-gooders Brooklyn Do Gooder Awards to honor community service The misuse of do-gooder to mean â€Å"one who does genuine good† may have gone too far to reverse. If that’s the case, it’s unfortunate. We need a word that describes a person who acts according to his own idea of what doing good is without considering the consequences that might affect the recipients of the supposed good. For example, a corporation or celebrity might think that giving free shoes and free shirts to every person in a poor village is an excellent way to do good, whereas in reality the act would create worse poverty for the village cobblers, weavers, tailors, and seamstresses. English has other words to describe a person who tries to improve the lives of others. Philanthropist is an obvious choice, but many speakers might share the difficulty of the Wizard of Oz when he tries to use the word: Back where I come from there are men who do nothing all day but good deeds. They are called philaer, philaer, yes, er, Good Deed Doers. Ruling out philanthropist as too difficult to pronounce, we still have benefactor, humanitarian, altruist, and social reformer. At first I felt like I was thrown into the deep end, but in hindsight this was actually a positive step for me because it forced me to grow up very fast. I quickly learnt how to deal with mail and filing and also to respond to emails. The two years that I worked at Siza gave me a solid working base from which I have added to further. Over the summers of 2012 and 2013, I was fortunate enough to diversify my working experience with Club Interiors and interning with Royal Spades. These opportunities showed me a different side of the management field. Although I was only there for a short time, Club Interiors was invaluable for me both personally and professionally because I was working as a personal assistant to a junior designer there. While I was not actively involved in discussions with clients, I was able to observe and ask many questions of the PA who I was working alongside. Everyone feels as if they are ready for total independence when they decide to go away to college, but is breaking away when they are just beginning to set their futures a good idea? Use of language and Word Choice in My Last Duchess Essay -- Robert Bro

‘My Last Duchess’ by Robert Browning is a dramatic monologue in which the Duke of Ferrara is discussing the matter of a dowry with an emissary sent by a Count. The use of dramatic monologue allows the poet to subtly reveal the personality of the persona to the reader. The language used by the speaker allows the poet to evoke strong emotions in the reader. The reader is given an early insight into the personality of the Duke in the very first line of the monologue: ‘That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall’ This early impression portrays the Duke as a very sophisticated man with a wealth of knowledge in art. This impression is continued when he mentions the very artist who painted the Duchess, ‘Fra Pandolf’. However, even at this early stage there are some hints that the Duke may not be all that he claims to be- the use of the word ‘My’ is very possessive, perhaps suggesting that the duke sees the Duchess as no more than an object. Furthermore the use of the word ‘Last’ implies that there have been many Duchesses and that the eponymous individual is just the most recent, suggesting that the Duke may be dishonest. This aspect of the persona’s character is confirmed later in the monologue, when the Duke says: ‘She liked whate’er she looked on And her looks went everywhere’ Here the Duke is challenging the morality of the Duchess, clearly suggesting that she has been unfaithful to him, showing his jealousy. This jealousy is aimed principally at Fra Pandolf, who he thinks is trying to seduce his fiancà ©e. This seems quite absurd to the reader as Fra Pandolf is a religious man and so this suggests that the Duke is a deeply insecure and extremely jealous persona. Of course this insecurity even... ... Then all smiles stopped together’ The use of the word ‘commands’ here yet again shows the possessive nature of the Duke and the alliteration in the phrase ‘smiles stopped’ emphasises it, which makes the awfulness of the Duke’s actions clear to the reader. Even the use of the personal pronoun ‘I’, something which is used repeatedly towards the end of the poem, emphasises the superficiality of the Duke and this leaves the reader feeling nothing less than hatred for him. In his dramatic monologue ‘My Last Duchess’, Robert Browning successfully uses language, particularly word choice to gradually reveal the character of the Duke of Ferrara. The reader starts off being slightly unsure about the Duke but this quickly turns to hatred as he describes the murder of the Duchess. This revelation of character make the poem exciting and very enjoyable to read.

Measure the temperature of the boiling water. Record the highest temperature reading. This is the control to compare with. Measure out table salt using a kitchen measuring spoon. Level the spoonful. Add the measured salt to the b oiling water and stir.Measure the temperature of the boiling water with the salt in it. Record the highest temperature reading. Repeat for other amounts of salt. Eulogy of Piggy Essay

Hello, my name is Ralph. We gather here today to remember our dearest friend, Piggy. Piggy was a misunderstood, brave boy with a big heart, only wanting what was best for his friends, who’s been taken from us by savagery, stupidity and pride. I hadn’t met Piggy before the crash. All I remember was waking up after it happened, and found a boy lying near a tree. When I walked over to him, we introduced each other. I told him my name was Ralph, and waited for a reply in return. But he hesitated to tell me his name was Piggy, as he thought I would I would tease him, but I told him that I would never tease him about it. Later we found the conch to help us locate the other boys who had survived. When we went around introducing ourselves to the others, they weren’t so lenient on teasing Piggy. Piggy was a strong and good hearted boy, especially when the others teased him, took his glasses or talked over him. Even though Jack and his hunters again and again pushed him to the edge, he would stand strong and not lose his temper, and I greatly respect him for not letting his pride or emotions give in to the bullies. Another thing I valued in Piggy was that he was always supportive in the things I did, even if they went wrong or if Jack had something negative to say about it. Piggy had so many good qualities, that no one ever noticed which will be greatly regretted by many. To be truly truthful, Piggy was the closet thingy I had to a best friend, and it kills me to know that I will never see him again, and I guess if he was here with us today, he would say keep you head up Ralph, and everything will be alright. Piggy will be sorely missed.

How to Start an Academic Club in School For students planning to apply to a selective college, membership in an academic club is a must. College officials will be looking for activities that make you stand out, and club membership is an important addition to your record. This doesnt mean you will have to feign interest in an organization that already exists. If you share a strong interest in a hobby or subject with several friends or fellow students, you may want to consider forming a new club. By forming an official organization that really interests you, you are demonstrating true leadership qualities. Wanting to take on the role of a leader is only the first step. You need to find a purpose or theme that will engage you and others. If you have a hobby or interest that you know enough other students share, go for it! Or maybe there is a cause you want to help. You could start a club that helps keep the natural spaces (like parks, rivers, woods, etc.) clean and safe. And once you establish a club around a topic or activity you love, you are sure to stay more engaged. You might receive the added honor of recognition from the public and/or school officials who appreciate your initiative. So how should you go about this? If you are starting a club at school, you may want a teacher to serve as advisor as a first step. You may need a teacher or coach just to gain permission for using school facilities.The teacher or advisor may be temporary. Sometimes, a teacher will start the first meeting and encourage students to follow through with organization.The most important requirements for starting a successful club are interest and commitment.Once you know you have a team willing to commit to a regular meeting time and a cause, you can manage the rest with ease.Next you will need clear organization.
